A Commercial Cleaning Checklist for Business Owners
What belongs on a daily, weekly, and periodic commercial cleaning scope — and how to write a scope that a provider can actually be held to.
2 min read
A cleaning scope that says "general cleaning" is unenforceable. Both sides end up working from assumptions, and the gap only surfaces when something obvious has been missed. A written scope fixes that, and it does not need to be long — it needs to be specific about frequency.
Every visit
These are the items where falling behind is immediately visible.
- Restrooms: toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, fixtures — cleaned and sanitised
- Restroom consumables restocked
- Waste and recycling emptied and liners replaced
- High-touch points: door handles, push plates, light switches, shared equipment
- Kitchen and break room: counters, sink, appliance exteriors, tables
- Entrance and reception: glass, matting, and the immediate walkway
- Floors: vacuumed or mopped as the surface requires
Weekly or several times a week
- Desks and workstation surfaces where staff permit access
- Interior glass and partitions at eye level
- Meeting rooms reset and surfaces cleaned
- Edges, corners, and under accessible furniture
- Dusting of reachable ledges, sills, and fixtures
Periodic — monthly or quarterly
These need their own interval, because folding them into a routine visit means they get dropped whenever the visit runs short.
- Detailed hard-floor care appropriate to the surface
- Grout lines in tiled areas
- Interior windows in full, including frames and tracks
- High dusting: vents, light fittings, tops of cabinets and frames
- Inside appliances such as the refrigerator and microwave
- Baseboards and door frames throughout
Write down what is excluded, too
Most disputes are about things nobody agreed either way. Exterior windows above ground level, carpet extraction, waste removal beyond normal volumes, and anything requiring specialist access are all worth stating explicitly as in or out.
Reviewing it
A scope written once and never revisited stops matching the building. Headcount changes, a room changes use, a floor gets replaced. Reviewing it periodically — and after any significant change — keeps the arrangement honest. We check in after service and discuss whether the frequency and scope still fit.
